Is Remote Access to My Office HIPAA Compliant? (Part II)

Remote Access in dental offices is a Hot Topic and continues to generate interest from our Clients. As a follow-up article, we further explain Remote Access, Common Software’s used to access computers remotely, and HIPAA Compliance implications for accessing your data externally via mobile, tablets, etc.

You can access data in your office remotely in several ways.

One way to gain access is through a desktop remote control, where you see all the icons as if you were sitting in front of your computer. This gives you the most familiar interface. The common desktop remote control programs are Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDP), Virtual Network Computing (VNC), LogMeIn, TeamViewer, etc.

Another way to get to your data is through The Cloud. If your practice management software is in the cloud you can access it thru a web browser or RDP session from anywhere.

In fact the cloud offers a more seamless transition from work to remote access. This is because the data is stored in the cloud to begin with, not at your office. So the same way you access the data at your office will be the same method used remotely. In addition, the ability to work out of a single database, across multiple offices, allows offices a single interface from which to schedule and coordinate.

Both of these methods will allow some form of mobile and tablet access.
